PICTURES OF AN INNER EVOLUTION

Tim Pallis, Kyoto 1979

Herbert Sax is born in the sign of Leo, dominated by the image of the sun. The sun has shown him the brilliant world that can be his, if he doesn’t forget that as the „Sunflower“ he is rooted in the earth and growing on water. By nature baptized by fire, he must seek a baptism of water, because fire is just to burn and cannot reflect upon oneself. Maybe that’s the challenge he sees in painting with water and ink. As he says: „Even if the battle is lost, we may still win the war“, so by taking charge of the vehicle of his being he starts directing it through life as an apprentice driver, and at present his way of practise is the brush, which wishes to awake an eye on the tip of its hair. When the night closes over us and we don’t have the sun’s brilliance to show us the world, then we must develop our inner observation because wenwill have to cross through the sea of life and death into inner realms. As the man on his fish we may move through the waters toward the goal that will quench our thirst: „Where do I find the water of life?“

Herbert Sax is exploring these inner realms in his work and is therefore rather painting from inside out than from outside impression. In a way he is living back the visual aspects of that inner world to permeate his everyday life with the archetypes of his soul. Their pictorial expressions are not merely images or symbols, but a reality experienced. Once we have succeded in passing through the night, the strength of intuition becomes a reliable support, and our soul is able to meet life and to grow. Herbert Sax has begun this inner evolution: being in contact with his soul and allowing her to be his guide, he is living as simple as possible, working diligently with nature’s gifts. In many of his paintings I feel that he is regenerated by the woman’s love, which from inside has taken firm initiative and acts.

Maybe only in accordance with the feminine principle a man can perform the task of inner evolution, as it requires the receiving quality as well. Mutual inquiry and confession are needed at the outset of the path, until the female aspects too reach full maturity, thus balancing the pull of the moon opposed to the sun. By taming the worldly desires man can release the energy to concentrate on the work of uniting the souls. We may become to ourselves as the parents keeping a loving and protecting eye on their baby; or as the „Travellers“ we proceed together through life, shooting an arrow from our heart gazing toward our common goal. Also the architectural forms and landscapes in his paintings can be felt as visual expressions of the union of „man“ and „woman“. The „Seeds“ heading toward an expecting womb are not just a symbol of a physical conception, but seeds of life moving into a union that will inspire a new spiritual awakening.

Herbert Sax has listened to the message of ancient values and tries to receive them by praying in meditation. Our human life is the sacred „Temple“, where the sun is appearing from behind illuminating the sea and the column. We are looking from inside out and from outside in at the same time. The great round mirror has become lit.
